With over one billion (and counting) views on TikTok under the search Fourth Wing, it’s safe to say that Rebecca Yarros’ romantasy book series is well loved by the BookTok girlies. After many years of AI edits and hyper-specific fan casts, readers were ecstatic to learn that the story of Violet Sorrengail would soon be transformed into a TV series, with Deadline confirming in October 2023 that an on-screen adaptation was in the works.

“I’m so humbled and thrilled to announce that Fourth Wing has been optioned and is currently in development for a TV series by Amazon MGM Studios with Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society producing!!!” Rebecca penned on Instagram.

“They’re an ABSOLUTELY incredible team, and I can’t wait to see their adaptation of Fourth Wing brought to life! I have all the faith in the world in them!”

Since the announcement, fans have been clutching at straws for any hints of when the series will drop, and thanks to the detective work of some eagle-eyed fans, we *finally* have a bit more info about what we can expect.

When is the Fourth Wing TV show coming out?

Since the series was announced in 2023, Fourth Wing enthusiasts have been counting down the days until the TV adaptation hits our screens.

We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Prime Video has yet to provide fans with any timeline on the Fourth Wing series release date, with filming on the show still yet to commence. On the flip side, the series’ production company Outlier Society announced in July 2024 that Breaking Bad writer and producer Moira Walley-Beckett had officially signed on as the series’ showrunner – aka the series is *definitely* happening.

Amazon MGM Studios and Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society have also acquired the rights to the Fourth Wing sequel books, Iron Flame and Onyx Storm, along with the two yet-to-be-released books in Rebecca Yarros’ Empyrean Series.

What is Fourth Wing about?

While we don’t yet know how closely the series will follow the events of the book, the official logline of the TV series has given fans a brief overview of what to expect in Fourth Wing’s on-screen adaptation.

“Enter the brutal world of Basgiath War College where there is only one rule: Graduate or Die. Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail is expected to live a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general – her tough-as-talons mother – has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.”

“If the fire-breathing beasts don’t kill her, one of her fellow riders just might. Suspense, action, romance, and dragons blend together in a propulsive fantasy adventure.”

Who is cast in Fourth Wing?

Long before news of the Fourth Wing TV series was announced, fans have been putting together their dream cast lists, and while nothing has been officially confirmed, Rebecca has dropped a few hints about who will be joining Basgaith as Xaden Riorson and Violet Sorrengail.

Responding to fan casts of Xaden, Rebecca told Variety, “We’re just going to say that he’s POC, we’re just going to leave it at that. I didn’t rise to the bait of a lot of those posts [that portrayed Xaden as white], which I think probably got me some flack, but I knew we were already in development for TV, and I want to make sure that role is open to as much diversity as possible.”

“[Outlier Society] know how staunch I am against whitewashing Xaden, and so I think that’s the biggest thing,” she later told fans during a Q&A session, adding that she has little control over the cast list.

Despite the vague cast notes from Rebecca, fans have rallied behind some clear front-runners to embody BookTok’s favourite enemies-to-lovers – placing Australian star Josh Heuston and Twilight’s Mackenzie Foy as the favourites to play Xaden and Violet.

While the duo have yet to confirm or deny their involvement, they have definitely dropped a few hints. In February 2025, fans spotted Josh sitting at an airport reading a copy of the latest Fourth Wing sequel Onyx Storm. Meanwhile, Mackenzie also showed her love for the latest book in the Empyerean Series, sharing a snap of Onyx Storm to her Instagram Stories.
